The things they do and say...

Indeed, every inch our sweet, good-girl, tough-cookie princess. She has always been good about entertaining herself for several minutes which allows us to pick up around the house, etc. Usually we appreciate this, but today I discovered that Maya had scribbled all over the back door and her ride-on car with a crayon--not a washable one of course. I was on the computer right next to her, but she moved quietly from the easel to forbidden surfaces. When I told her, "Wait until Daddy sees this," Maya said, "Poor Daddy." She knows that she's a princess.

In Nathan's class the letter of last week was "O." He thought of some "o" words, found the matching items, and posed for photos. We made a little book for show-and-tell.

"ow" or "ouch"

Nathan found the oatmeal in the pantry. He did not want to try it but instead, told me that horses eat oats.

We could not find any toy (or real) owls or ostriches easily, so Nathan put "oven" and "orange" in his book.

He also told me that one of his classmates had brought in a camera when they were on the letter "u." (His class uses the Writing without Tears curriculum, not alphabetical order.) Peter and I were puzzled. A camera for "u"? Nathan explained that his friend did not know that camera does not have a "u."

This reminds me of last school year, when Nathan reported that they celebrated his teacher's twentieth birthday. (She is a grandmother.) He said that the kids counted to guess her age, but they stopped at twenty, the highest number many of them knew--and the teacher may have stopped their guessing there too. Nathan later asked me how old people can fit through doorways. In his experience growing older means growing taller.
