The Dress-up Game
Maya was invited to a ballet birthday party, so her mother quickly made a no-sew tutu. She added the beret herself. Peter watched the tutu-making and asked: "She doesn't have to wear a tutu, does she?" Katie and I decided that "tutu" and "have to" do not belong in the same sentence. Besides, Maya liked tutu immediately.
She still has lots of fun in Nathan's hand-me-downs which make up the majority of her warmer clothing. When Nathan was around this age, he also had strong preferences, leading his mom to iron on airplanes and such onto his shirts. We constantly tell the kids that they are beautiful people because of who they are, not what they wear. (I just asked Nathan if he knew that he was beautiful for being a great person and not his clothing, and he said: "Uh...yes. Thank you." I said something similar to Maya earlier today, and she responded: "Yes." Do you think all such parent-child chats will be so sweet and agreeable? )
